2014 Forum Outing - Warmup Course #1 - The Old Course at Bedford Springs

By Colby on 10/19/2014

Long.

That's all I can say about the Old Course at Bedford Springs.

Long.

It was a grey, threatening sky that greeted Jeff and I as we drove up the bag drop at Bedford Springs.  We had received a call earlier that they would like to move our tee time from 8:10 to 8:50 as they were expecting some fog.  As it turns out there was no fog, however the first tee time had been moved up to 8:20 and there was a small tournament that was heading out starting at 8:20.  We were the first group after these people.  We managed to talk the proshop into letting us out before them, and all was good.

Originally slated to play the Tillingham tees (6,023 yards and slope and rating of 69.3/130), Jeff thought it would be fun to play the Ross tees (6,446 and 71.9/136).  The course was a little wet and we were CPO.  There was no roll at all, and some balls plugged or bounced backwards.  After paring the first hole (Par 4), and making a bird on the second, we came against the first of the long par 5s.  Measuring 577 yards, this was not the longest Par 5 on the course (there were others at 496, 562, 571 and the longest at 596).  And with the wet fairways, with a wind that always seemed to be into us, these played much, much longer.

After beating ourselves up on the Ross tees, we moved up to the Tillingham tees for the second round.  In both rounds, the rain came down on us off and on, however we only needed to get our umbrellas out on the short par 3 #14, the rest of the time was cloudy with just some very light drizzle.

The course was really nice, great conditions and fantastic greens given the weather.  The scores weren't good, however the day was greatly enjoyed.  Off to Salem, VA and Hidden Valley for tomorrow's rounds.
