Greetings all...Yank coming to you the 4th floor of Xanadu in NMB....just got back from OB....that's Oyster Bay, not to be confused from where I play often, Out of Bounds...gotta tell you, OB is back! Best conditions I have ever seen it in. Greens are as good as it gets. Fairways, rough, tees, all terrific shape. We've all loved the layout....now you can love the conditions as well. Thanks to Big Tuna, Brian, for a great day of golf and friendship. Saw and visited with VT Paulie as well. For the price, which includes a nice breakfast, ordering off the menu for lunch (Rueben was terrific) and two beers (microbrews even!), you're almost golfing for free. Call and book this place NOW! |

Way to go mon ami Yank! It's hard not to love a course like Oyster Bay, whatever the conditions! Golfers who are planing a near future trip should consider to put OB in their line-up for sure! P. S. : VT Paulie is a true gentleman! |

Glad to hear about Oyster Bay being in good shape as our group will be playing it in October. I have always had a soft spot for OB since it was the first course i ever played in MB on my first trip to the strand back in 1995. |

If you want to stay NORTH...the Cherry Grove area is highly recomended by me + my family.
I believe Yank likes it too.
We stayed at The Prince + Laguna Keyes...both nice ,but much different from one another.
Yank...good to hear about OB.....I played it a couple years ago...then played Pearl...and Pearl was much, much nicer IMO.

Anyone else see this on golf.com about the island green 17th @ Oyster Bay in the World Am for Flight 1 (low handis) ? Sample-
'Houston' slammed home his next putt for a 9. Our group score smacked of a multiplication table: 3-6-9.
"That was a huge putt," I told him. "Huge."
"I know it," he said, "I didn't want to make a 10."
"Trust me," I said, "I'll bet you right now that you didn't make the only 9 here today. In fact, I guarantee there will be a higher score on this hole today than 9."
We hadn't been in the clubhouse more than a minute when a fellow competitor walked. "How'd you guys do on 17?," he asked. "I made a (bleeping) 15!"
I was going to go to find Houston to give him the good news. He was at the bar ordering a pair of Miller Lites. But before I even got started, another player came in and asked how we liked the pin at 17?
"Ten balls," he said.
What?
"Ten balls," he repeated. "I saw a guy ahead of us hit 10 balls in the water there today. We're not sure, but we estimate that he made a 24 on that hole."

Makes me feel a little better about the 10 I carded on no. 9 at River's Edge. At least it was a par 5! |

Those big numbers must mean they did not have a drop zone behind the green, as they usually do, for regular play. |

Art, it sounds from the following like they used the women's tee as the drop zone. It's often been observed that this island green is tougher than 17 at Sawgrass since it's longer from the back tee and the green is smaller.
" The drop zone, a forward tee box, was already badly mutilated with divots. Plus, it was a mere 52-yard shot to the front pin, which was on the narrowest strip of green from that angle. If they aimed left, toward the back-middle of the green, there was a bunker that could've served as a backstop. Otherwise, this 52-yard wedge shot from a tight lie, depending on the outcome of your drop, was one nasty shot."

It's interesting that OB played USGA style drop areas, instead of the free gift style used and needed for resort play. I agree the OB #17 is tougher+ longer from the back tee (165 yards)than TPC Sawgrass and the green is smaller. OB is mean from the back tees, especially with tournament pins. Hopefully OB didn't have a front pin on #17 every day.

Played it the first day of WA. Guy 2 groups ahead of us apparently had a huge number also. I did not see all of it but just enough to know that it was ugly. I guess he elected to play from the shells first and that did not play out well. From there he proceeds to that 50ish yard shot drop zone and from there begins to raise the water level more and more with balls. I'm not sure where behind the green they could have put the drop zone that was not just dirt. I really did not see any place back there that did not look like just bare ground and rutted up. Pin for us was pretty much middle on a serious downslope. |
